More than three years have passed since Afghanistan fell silent with regard to its musical instruments and singing. In that time, the strings have been severed, curtains have been torn asunder, and voices have been stifled, engulfing that ancient and proud land in a profound silence marked by the absence of music and song. Following the fall of Afghanistan to the Taliban on August 15, 2021, the nation’s musical heritage endured its most devastating blow, succumbing to an eerie silence and fading into obscurity. The invaluable treasures of Afghan music have either been displaced and scattered across the globe or have been condemned to a silence that echoes through the void. Yet, as the saying goes, as long as roots remain in the soil, there is hope for renewal. The strings can be played once more, the hymns can rise again, and the silence of that motherland can transform into an eternal cry that reverberates around the world.

Music in Exile is a non-profit organization dedicated to fostering the growth and preservation of music in exile. Given the profound significance of this issue and the complete silencing of Afghanistan's ancient and historic musical heritage, the music of Afghanistan in exile constitutes a central focus of the Music in Exile Foundation's efforts. In light of the historical context, the relentless passage of time, and the prevailing dominance of ignorance in Afghanistan, this institution recognizes its duty to collaborate with artists, educators, civil society members, and all those who value the art and music of Afghanistan. Together, they strive to safeguard the legacy of past generations for the benefit of future generations and the unfolding seasons of Afghanistan.

Within this framework, the historical foundation for establishing this segment within the Music in Exile organization serves to unite the music of Afghanistan in exile as a significant movement. It aims to bring together institutions, organizations, artists, and members of civil society under a unified banner to advocate for the preservation and recognition of Afghan music. This organization seeks to garner the spiritual support of renowned and influential figures in Afghan music, culture, literature, and civil society, as well as several international personalities and institutions that have long championed the cause of Afghan music, even prior to the organization's inception.
